Resize vs upscale

Resizing changes dimensions. Upscaling increases pixel count. If an image is too small for print, it often needs upscaling, not just a DPI metadata change.

Best DPI settings

Use 300 DPI for most interior print images and 600 DPI for detailed artwork or cover images.

How to calculate needed pixels

Multiply the print size by the DPI. A 4 inch image at 300 DPI needs 1,200 pixels. At 600 DPI, it needs 2,400 pixels.

Keep the image proportional

Never stretch only width or only height. Keep the aspect ratio locked so your image does not look distorted.
